The Regional Educational Service Agency of Marquette-Alger announces its current special education services | News, Sports, Jobs

MARQUETTE – Section 3 of Public Law 451 of 1976, as amended (Michigan Compulsory Special Education Act) requires local school districts to provide or contract for the delivery of special education programs and services resident students with disabilities from birth to 26 years of age or until graduation from high school.

Special education programs and services are also available to incarcerated youth who would be eligible to receive free appropriate public education under the Disability Education Act.

Students with disabilities are eligible for services in the following categories: cognitive impairment, emotional impairment, hearing impairment, visual impairment, deafblindness, physical impairment, other health condition, specific learning disabilities, severe multiple impairment, childhood developmental delay childhood, autism spectrum brain disorder, head trauma, and speech and language disorders.

Children, from birth to age 3, may be eligible for Early On services, which do not require special education eligibility, if they have a developmental delay or a pre-established condition that has a high probability of causing developmental delay.

Preset conditions include conditions such as chromosomal abnormalities; genetic or congenital disorders; sensory impairments; inborn errors of metabolism; disorders reflecting a disturbance in the development of the nervous system; congenital infections; severe attachment disorders; and disorders secondary to exposure to toxic substances, including fetal alcohol syndrome.

Referral of persons suspected of having a disability may be carried out by a parent or guardian or, with the consent of a parent or guardian, by appropriate professional staff (including a licensed physician, registered nurse , a social worker or school staff), to the local school principal or director of special education, Marquette Alger Regional Educational Service Agency, 321 E.
